The Israel Hour with Israeli Emissaries

Led by our Young Israeli Emissaries, this hour will be a relaxed yet exciting hour to get to know Itamar and Lior. Through food, music, dance, movies and popular Israel Culture, the land of Israel will come alive and live right here in Stamford at Kulanu.  Come and be a part of this innovative hour.

Jews and Money with Raf Carruthers

Where does the stereotype of “Rich Jew” come from?  Historically what is the Jewish association with money and the laws governing it?  How do we, as contemporary Jews, make money and invest our money ethically?  How and why do we give money away?

Confirmation with Rabbi Marc Disick & Melissa Cohavi

The world is in trouble, from wars to global warming to slave trading. Judaism allows us no excuse for doing nothing.  Learn what you can do and meet people who are doing it.  This class involves hands-on lobbying in Washington, DC, social action, and a crash course on how to repair the world. ( Required for all Temple Sinai Confirmation students.)

Eat It! with Peter Pelaia (first timers only)

Cook and eat your way through Jewish communities around the world.  Experience the tastes and smells of Jewish food while studying the how’s and why’s of our varied traditions.

Ethics of Disney with Melissa Cohavi

Disney films are fun.  They can also be used to trigger ethical concepts.  All constructed as moral tales, each movie teaches a lesson through the trials and tribulations of the hero.  Is it okay for Aladdin to steal bread?  Who is the real villain in Snow White?  Is Mary Poppins the prophet Elijah?

If you think baseball is one of God’s gifts to humankind, this class is for you.  We will analyze the game to find Torah lessons and Jewish ethics.

Comedy Tonight! with Marc Weiner

When is a Jewish joke funny and when is it offensive?  Is it the words, the intonation, the body language, the accent?  Use the empathy labyrinth to explore human emotions.  Define the line between funny and offensive while learning about comedy with funnyman Marc Weiner of Weinerville and Nickelodeon.

Sculpt It! with Harriet Lacker

Using artist’s clay, you will have the opportunity to use your hands and your imagination to sculpt while discussing the interesting question: Where is the line between sculpture and idol worship? Be prepared to get your hands dirty and your mind activated!

Web It! with Sima Broza

Continue, improve and upgrade the Kulanu website by becoming a Kulanu web designer! Find out what attracts teens to different sites. Design and post weekly updates, and choose appropriate content and interesting links for our Kulanu community.

Play It! with Eyal Maoz

Play an instrument? Find your groove in jazz improv with the Kulanu Klezmer ensemble and Eyal Maoz, a composer and professional musician.  Born in Israel and now residing in New York, Eyal performs all over the world.  (Please specify the instrument that you play.)

Learn about the work and lives of some of the most renowned Jewish artists and be inspired!  Take the opportunity to experiment and create works of your own.

Learn to think on your toes and incorporate real life situations into dramatic/comedic scenes. Tackle your views of prejudice, racism and bullying as you find and develop your Jewish voice, and the tools to express yourself.

The Living Temple with Nahum Daniels

The Jerusalem Temple has been at the center of Jewish life, thought and ritual practice since King Solomon laid its cornerstone and, perhaps, since Moses and Aaron assembled the portable sanctuary called the Mishkan.  What went on up there on the Temple Mount?  And how does the Judaism we practice today reflect, reenact, reverse and restore the ancient practices of our ancestral Priests, Levites and Israelites?  This course will attempt to shed light on some of our most obscure practices.  (Juniors and seniors only, or by special request.)

Rosh Chodesh: It's a Girl Thing! with Ariela Pelaia

This fun class uses art, drama, stories and food to explore Jewish history and identity from a teenage girl's point of view. Each meeting we'll learn a little bit more about our ancestors, our stories, our food and talk about what it means to be a Jewish woman in today's world. Come find out why girls all over the country love being part of a Rosh Chodesh group!  This class is for 10th and 11th grade girls only.

Ethics of Wizardry with Dr. Elissa Kaplan

What can we learn about Jewish Ethics from the Harry Potter books?  We’ll look at the nature of true friendships, memory, and what makes a good person.  You’ll see Hogwarts from a whole new angle.

Israel: The Reality with Don Adelman

Be prepared to delve into all aspects of Israel today: her place on the world scene, her moral and political dangers, her incredible advancements in science and technology.  Israel faces a daily struggle to maintain a safe and secure society.  Be prepared to become Israel's advocate while confronting and using the arguments against her.

Scandalous with Dr. Betsy Stone

People love to gossip!  Are there limitations on what we can say?

What can we do with information?  Is it ethical to read about Britney Spears?  To criticize a politician?  To use dirty money for a good cause?  Learn about the obligations being Jewish places on YOUR freedom of speech.

Games Jews Play with Raf Carruthers

Jewpardy, Four Corners, Crossword Puzzles, Hebrew Baseball, and anything else we can discover.  If you love trivia and fast action games, this class is for you.  Buzzers not required.

Jews and the Church with Sima Broza

Search through history exploring the relationship between the church and the Jewish People. We will briefly look at the foundations in the New Testament and go beyond the development of Christian theology to the medieval era and the beginning of many myths about the Jews in the Renaissance, Reformation and counter-Reformation.   Looking at the pogroms of the late 1800's and early 1900's we will study the church’s response to the Holocaust, finishing with the relationship we as Jews have with modern day Christianity.

Acting Out the Bible with Jonathan Cahr

Integrating creative dramatics, role playing and improvisations, we will bring to life biblical characters and events.  By acting out biblical text and interpretation, you will gain a deeper understanding of the text.  Through discussion of issues and conflicts, a sense of community will develop along with the excitement of feeling fully engaged in learning.

War and Peace with Don Adelman

What will peace in the Middle East look like and is it possible?  By studying the history of the region, we will discuss and debate this hot topic.

Eat It! Holocaust Survivor Stories with Peter Pelaia (2nd hour; first timers only)

Using the Holocaust Survivor’s Cookbook as a guide, journey through history and the heroism of personal stories.  Each story is accompanied by a family recipe, which you will recreate.  Become part of history and by preserving the recipes, but more importantly we will help to insure that the stories of these brave Survivors will live on for generations to come.

The letters of the Israeli alphabet are not just letters; they are symbols of our history, our philosophy and our life as a Jewish people.  Learn how to form the letters in traditional and decorative forms.  Then chose a letter to illuminate for your own.

Puppetry with Marc Weiner (first timers only)

Nickelodeon returns to Kulanu!  Marc Weiner, stand up comic, voice of Swiper the Fox and master puppeteer will teach you how to construct puppets, and how to get them to talk.  Learn ethics and empathy through puppetry.

Who Knows One? with Rabbi David Walk

Do Jews believe in fortune telling and astrology?  Have you ever heard of Kaballah, or Gematria or Numerology?  Every Hebrew letter represents a number, so Hebrew words have values by adding the numbers of the letters together.  What do these numbers mean?

What role does religion play in our political choices?  Should Jewish perspectives dictate our political agendas?  What is the Jewish view on leadership and good government?  What is the role of religion in politics?  Is there Jewish activity in the political system?  Let’s look at the election from a whole different angle.

Learn this simple, effective self-defense system that emphasizes instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios, and has taken the fitness world by storm!  Krav Maga is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, and has been taught to hundreds of law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians in the United States.
